Like most businesses in these unprecedented times, Google is taking steps to protect the health of its employees and minimize the spread of COVID-19. Due to these business changes, and the need to maintain the integrity of Google search and maps, Google just announced changes to some key Google My Business features.

The main feature change is the suspension of Google reviews, as Google doesn’t want people leaving negative or false feedback due to the coronavirus outbreak. People attempting to leave reviews receive a “your contribution will be delayed” message, which may cause some additional frustration or confusion. Review responses and Q&A entries are also suspended, which effectively keeps everyone from documenting negative information anywhere on the Google My Business platform.

Google My Business updates that normally require approval, like new business listings, business descriptions, and open/closed status, will be prioritized so Google can focus on health-related businesses. If you’re not a critical health-related business, you should expect a delay.

If you’re currently running any type of Google review campaign, you should suspend your effort for the time being. Maintain a list of happy client names so you can follow up quickly once the suspension is lifted. You can still make updates to your listing, but allow extra time for Google to review and approve.
